The Rolls Royce's Iron Lady

Rolls Royce is has one of the most beautiful, elegant and most recognisable emblem in the world; “The Spirit of Ecstasy”. It was designed by Charles Robinson Sykes. She has been on the Rolls Royce’s radiators since 1911.

The radiator grille for the Rolls Royce is completely made by hand. No measuring tools are ever used. One man will spend a whole day to make the radiator grille and will than spend over 5 hours polishing it.

“The Spirit of Ecstasy” was imaged after a secretary, Eleanor Thronton who was employed by Mr Montagu; he was a pioneer of automobiles in England and also the editor of the magazine “the car”. Charles Sykes and Lord Montagu where close friends and Lord Montagu asked him to build a mascot for his car, which he later named “The Whisper”. It illustrated a young woman in loose robes with her forefinger on her lips.

The Rolls Royce company saw the mascot on Lord Montagu’s car and asked Mr Sykes to create a mascot. The company was getting really concerned about the tasteless and ugly mascots people would have on their cars. In February 1911, Mr Sykes gave birth to “The Spirit of Ecstasy”. Both mascots where modelled after Lord Montagu’s secretary;  Eleanor Thornton. Due to both Mascots being modelled after the same person, they where almost identical.

Since that day, This mascot has been one of the main and most recognised features of the Rolls Royce.
